French Dalton Sturgill
Chilhowie, Va.

French Dalton Sturgill, 88, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017 after a prolonged illness. He was a veteran, having loyally served his country in the US Army. French was a true member of the community in many capacities. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Chilhowie for over 50 years. Being a faithful member of the Mt. View United Methodist Church, he served as choir director for many years. He was probably best known for his singing in gospel quartet. He was a successful business man, having operated family owned car washes for many years. He also enjoyed bee keeping, coin collecting, fishing, golfing, and Emory and Henry Football. French was preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Mamie Miller Sturgill; his wife, Evelyn Sturgill; mother-in-law, Louise Widner, and several siblings. Survivors include his son, Keith Monroe Sturgill; daughter, Lisa Louise Sturgill; grandchildren, Beattie Graham Sturgill and Emma Gray Sturgill; two brothers, Harley Sturgill and wife Barbra and Nick Sturgill and wife Eva; sister-in-law, Joyce Boyd; longtime friend, Ernie Phillips; and several nieces and nephews. Throughout this tragic illness French never lost his faith. Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Friday, January 6 in the Mt. View United Methodist Church with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to VFW Post 4667, PO Box 767, Marion, Va. 24354.
