Grace Elizabeth Martin, at the age of 97, went to be with her Savior Sunday evening, April 8, 2018. Born December 29, 1920 in Clinchburg, Virginia to John Emory Anderson and Flora Vina Barker Anderson, Grace was raised in Atkins then moved to Chilhowie upon her marriage to Robert Washington Martin where they established a thriving Angus beef cattle farm and a tobacco farm. Grace and Robert were blessed with two sons Robert (Bob) and John Wayne Martin. Grace graduated from Atkins High School in 1937 before attending Emory and Henry College earning a BA degree in education. Grace also earned her Master's in Education from the University of Virginia graduating at the Charlottesville campus in 1970. She spent her entire 30+ year teaching career in the Smyth County school system, both elementary and junior high school. Grace was also an active member of her church, Friendship Baptist on Loves Mill Road in Chilhowie. She also was an active supporter of the woman's factory, Buster Brown, who made piece work quilts and clothes and sold them for charity or donated them to those in need. Survivors include her sons, Bob Martin and daughter-in-law Catherine and John Wayne Martin; her grandchildren, Holly King and Jonathan Martin; four great-grandchildren, Shaylee Martin, Kenzie Martin, Jonah King, and Hannah King; her younger brother, John Carroll Anderson of Roanoke, as well as, several nieces and nephews and their families. Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Martin; grandson, Marcus Martin; and two younger sisters, Anna Ruth Salmon and Opal Pauline Anderson. Funeral services will be 1 PM Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the Friendship Baptist Church on Loves Mill Road in Chilhowie. Interment will follow in the family's farmland cemetery next to her husband. The family will receive friends from 11 until 1 PM prior to the funeral service at the church. Services will be conducted by Pastor David Gary, Pastor Paul Jones and her granddaughter Holly King giving the eulogy.
