Roger Clarke Sturgill, 79, of Chilhowie passed away at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon on Monday, September 25, 2017. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Clarence Sturgill and his mother, Pauline Petty Sturgill.
Roger served on the Smyth County Board of Supervisors, Tennessee Valley Authority Agricultural Board of Directors, worked as a Virginia Tech Extension Technician, and spent most of his life as a beef and tobacco farmer and owner/operator of Sturgill's Greenhouse in Chilhowie. He was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Chilhowie and Charter Member of the Riverside Ruritan Club.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Porter Sturgill; daughter, Debra Lynn Sturgill; brother, James D. Sturgill (Linda) of Chilhowie; two nephews, Brian D. Sturgill (Sandi) of Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio, and Kevin C. Sturgill (Delena) of Marion; two brothers-in-law, Ellis Porter and Rev. Michael Porter (Lola); and several cousins also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 at the Riverside Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at the Riverside Baptist Church in Chilhowie. Memorial contributions can be made to the Riverside Baptist Church, C/O Linda Sturgill, 1429 Riverside Rd., Chilhowie, Va. 24319.
