Thomas Mack Brown, 79, of Chilhowie, Va. passed away at his home on Feb. 3, 2021.
Psalm 91:2 I will say to the Lord, "My Refuge and my Fortress, My God, in whom I trust". Psalm 91 became a prayer that Tom prayed in many years later as he did his daily devotional. He believed it and claimed its truth. We complete an education, work hard in our profession, and plan for retirement. We often think we have things under control; but, when difficulties come into our lives, we remember how helpless we are without Christ. Our salvation and the strength for our daily lives come from God. We need to rely on God's strength for life's journey.
Tom was born May 23, 1941 to the late Charles J. and Edna Mock Brown. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Forest, Charles, and Morton Brown. Tom was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Historian. He participated in home and foreign mission work. He also served as Sunday School Teacher and sang in the choir until his health began to fail.
Tom graduated from Liberty Hall High School. He attended Washington County Technical School where he studied drafting. He worked in the Engineering Department of HAPCO in Abingdon, Va as a drafter and retired after 43 years of service. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for many years. After retiring he became active with St. Clair-Chilhowie Senior Citizens.
Tom enjoyed woodworking as a hobby, but his passion was art. He was an artist for 50+ years. After retirement in 2007 he opened his lifelong dream of an art studio where he did art instruction and had a small gallery.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Lenora Newman Brown of 49 years; his son, Mark Brown of Chilhowie, Va.; brother-in-law, Fred P. Newman; his favorite sister-in-law, Andrea Newman; two nephews, Chuck Brown of Crozet, Va. and Conley Brown of Ashville, N.C.; aunt, Katherine Mock of Abingdon, Va.; cousins and other relatives too numerous to mention; as well as good friend, Basil Suits and wonderful neighbors, who were also so good to help during Tom's illness. A special "thank you" to Home Health Nursing, Inc. of Chilhowie and Hospice from Lebanon, Va. for their kindness and special care given to Tom. A special "thank you" to Evelyn Kilby and Dawn Blevins for their special care.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the family will have a private visitation at Williams Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted 2 PM, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021 at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Rev. David Gary officiating. Everyone attending is asked to please wear masks and social distance.
Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons and the Men's Sunday School class of Friendship Baptist Church.
Condolences can be made to the family online at www.williamsfuneralhomeofchilhowie.com. Williams Funeral Home of Chilhowie is serving the Brown Family.
